utan papper med visa

10 juni, 2008

Introduction Naomi Klein

6 juni, 2008

Naomi Klein visited Sweden this Tuesday 3rd June.

I introduced her at a packed Södra Teatern.

Here is what I said

Introduction Naomi Klein

Södra Teatern 3 juni

America Vera-Zavala

Naomi Klein was here 7 years ago.

It was the autumn of 2001 and the world looked rather different from now.

Klein was travelling around talking about her first book No Logo.

Apart from the big formal meetings, like this one, she also met, in much smaller gatherings with the movement. There were thousands of stories to listen to, about alternative summits, activism, and the alternatives to globalisations. There were thousands activists doing things, creating, proposing, networking.

It was the years of the movement of movements.

The characteristics of this period was the alternative summits. And Seattle was indeed the coming out party of a movement as Klein wrote in an essay. It was the fight against MAI, the Multilateral Agreement on Investements, the FTAA, Free Trade Area of the Americas.

A time with heated discussions on the book Empire, and the sometimes tiring discussion on what to do about the black block.

It was a creative time, with new movements like the Zapatistas, Peoples Global Action. The e-mail lists, the networks, the Attac movement, the World Social Forum process.

The left wing generation both me and Naomi Klein belong to really took advantage of being a generation of a new left. Cold-war did not force us into an either or position. It was years of possibilities of politics without dogmatism. We wanted to replace capitalism with something better and we did not care that much that that better thing was called. It was the end of the end of History and another world was possible.

We were called the anti-globalisation movement but we were the ones setting the agenda.

We were the alter-globalisation movement coming up with proposals and the establishment was against.

We proposed the cancellation of the third world debt, and the powerful men in world politics said no. We proposed the Tobin tax, fair trade, better food policy and they said no.

Naomi Klein gave voice to this movement.

With No Logo and with her essays published regularly in newspapers around the world and later on published in the book Fances and Windows, på svenska Stängsel och Öppningar.

She did not only write about how the Argentinean people asked the IMF to go to hell, another of her essays, but also made a documentary, The Take, about the interesting experiences in participatory democracy being made in workers led cooperatives in Argentina.

Naomi Klein has a unique ability to capture stories and tell them, with correct facts and figures right on time.

Now. Naomi Klein is here again.

This time there is no movement in that way.

The transformation to an anti-war movement has not been without complications.

Suddenly we were the ones saying no, and the establishment saying yes

They were saying yes to war, yes to torture and yes to Guantanamo.

We were shouting No.

Naomi Klein started to write about the war in Iraq and the occupation of Iraq. In her essays read all over the world she gave voice to the voices that were not heard, to the images not seen and to the links so many journalists missed being embedded in the US army.

Shw was going to write a short book on Iraq.

She wrote a long book on something called the Chockdoctrine.

I will not talk about the book, as the author is here.

I can only say that it is of great importance.

There is from time to time a great writer that comes forward and re-writes history. Give people a modern and accurate history writing. When I read the Chockdoctrine it was the second time in my life I was so overwhelmingly filled with a book. The first time was my first year of high school and I read The Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano.

The Chockdoctrine is not a hopeful book but it is inspiring.

Alfonso Guaron was so inspired by the book that he made a short film that we will look at later on.

It makes you want to do things with these images.

Movies, documentaries, articles.

Me and a friend are working on a dancetheatre performance inspired by the book.

The Chockdoctrine has received prices, is on the top of many best-seller lists.

It strengthens people, informing them and also many times telling people in one part of the world that the same thing is happening in another part.

Many people have not only read about the Chockdoctrine but have also felt it. Like the big latino community coming out in meetings in North America and Europe teling stories about being victims of it.

Thank you for sharing your texts with us

Welcome Naomi Klein
